"My Size" (Bass)
by John Entwistle
>From the album "Smash Your Head Against The Wall"
Written by John Entwistle, 1971, Sundazed Music.
Bass tab, transcribed by Jeremy D ([email protected]), with help from
David Goodwin and Gary L.'s original guitar transcription.
It may not be definitive, but at least it's a start.
This is my first tab, and I'm pretty damn proud of it.
The key is:h=hammer—on
p=pull off
...=hold/let ring 'til the next note
The intro and main riff:
G|————————————|————————————|————————————|——————————————|
D|————————————|————————————|————————————|——————————5———|
A|——5h7—7—7—7—|——5h7—7—7—7—|——5h7—7—7—7—|——————5h7———7—|
E|————————————|————————————|————————————|——5h7—————————|
...done in the verses as well.
Then, there's the bridge; it's easiest to listen to the recording for timing.
G|—————————|———————————|—————————————|————————————|————————
D|—————————|———————————|—————————————|—0...———————|0———————
A|—————————|—1...——————|1...—————————|————————————|————————
E|3...————1|———————————|—————————————|————————————|————————
"Now..." "round..." "You never.." "...ground."
G|————————|————————————|———————|————————|
D|0...————|————————————|———————|————————|
A|————————|0......—————|0...———|——0...—2|
E|————————|————————————|———————|————————|
"Make me...small, wish I was...tall"
Then right back to the verse, then chorus:
G|————————|————————————|——————————————|————————————————————————————|
D|————————|3———————————|—0...—————————|——————————0...——————————————|
A|—0...———|————————————|———————————0——|—2...———————————————————0...|
E|————————|————————————|——————————————|————————————————————————————|
"I'm gonna bring you... my size." "One of...gonna make ya fall."
G|————————|————————————|————————————|
D|————————|3...————————|—0——————————|
A|—0...———|————————————|—————0...———|
E|————————|————————————|————————————|
"I'm gonna bring you... my size,"
G|——————————————————————————————————————|
D|———————————————2...——0————————————2———|
A|—2———————————————————————————0————————|
E|——————————————————————————————————————|
"Smash your head...against the wall!
Continue with the necessary riffs (verse, bridge, chorus).
Improvise as you please. At the end, amid much crashy noise and such, there's a "Boris—the—Spider"
type run——
G|————————————————————|
D|————————————————————|
A|——7—6—5—4—3———0...——|
E|————————————3———————|
...and there you have it. Enjoy! Apologies for my excessive use of "then."
Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:
Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:
Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:
G|-------------------| D|-------------------| A|---3---------------| E|-------------------|
This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.
Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.
G|-------------------| D|-------5h7---------|
Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.
G|-------------------| D|-------7p5---------|
Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.
G|-------------------| D|-------5/7---------|
G|-------7b9---------|
G|-------7~----------|
Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.
Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
