Foo Fighters — Free Me

Standard Tuning

Intro is on guitar etc. This song basically uses
the same riff for most of the song. If possible,
for the heavy bit have bass settings to full and mid level,
then during the chorus pick the treble up. I haven't got
everything in order, but it's very easy to work out; just
listen to the song. Try to take note of the loudness of
certain "high" notes, such as the bridge as that
should be played fairly quietly on bass.

—Verse—

G|————————————————————————————|
D|————————————————————————————|
A|————————————————————————————|
E|—0—0—7—0—6—5——0—0—7—0—6—5———|

G|———————————————————————————————————————————|
D|———————————————————————————————————————————|
A|—————————7—————————7—————————7—————————————|
E|—0—0—7—0———0—0—7—0———0—0—7—0———0—0—7—0—6—5—| played multiple times

G|——————————————|
D|——————————————|
A|——————————————|
E|—0—0—7—0—6—5——|

—Chorus—

*play multiple times, it's all quite straight forward

G|————————————————————————————|
D|————————————————————————————|
A|————————————————————————————|
E|—3*————5*————4*————0*———————|

—Bridge—

Goes back into verse after a short baseless section, and then back
into chorus after that. Then into this bridge.

G|————————————————————————————|
D|————————————————————————————|
A|————————————————————————————| x2
E|—8*————10*————5*————————————|

It might sound better played on its corresponding notes on the A string,
ie A3 and A5.

G|————————————————————————————|
D|————————————————————————————|
A|————————————————————————————| X1
E|—7—7—6—6—3—3—3—0————————————|

Then goes back into verse, then chorus again etc. you'll work it out.

Any corrections, then please correct it the *** thing! however most of it
should be correct.

About Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1995. Singer and guitarist Dave Grohl formed the group as a one-man project after the dissolution of his previous band, Nirvana, in 1994. Prior to the release of the band's eponymous debut album in 1995, Grohl drafted Nate Mendel as bassist, William Goldsmith as drummer, and Pat Smear as guitarist to complete the group. The band was small, young, and they began with performances in Portland, Oregon before gaining popularity. Goldsmith left during the recording of the group's second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997), and Smear's departure followed soon afterward. They were replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl, respectively, although Stahl left prior to the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999).

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
