George Michael - Amazing Bass Tab

About George Michael

George Michael, born as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (Greek: ???????? ???????? ??????????, 25 June 1963) is a two-time Grammy Award winning English singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the 1980s, when he formed the pop duo Wham! along with his school friend Andrew Ridgeley. His first solo single, "Careless Whisper" was released when he was still in the duo and sold about six million copies worldwide.

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|
  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|
  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸

Hey man, thank you very much for tabbing my fav Pop song.
You're absolutely right. The song is mixed very well, so that I also sometimes can't tell whether guitar or bass is playing a note. My second thought is that GM played the bass on two tracks, one basic (bass) and one with accents and a flanger as effect.
I will spend much time with your tab, although I can tell you right now, that I think it's not E standard tuning but Eb standard as the lowest note being played is an Eb. Just check the first part of the chorus. It goes like:
Bb - Ab - F# - F - Eb - Ab - Bb.
Anyway thank you very much one more time for taking your time.
Cheers!

IMHO it's like:
Tuning: Eb standard, Difficulty: Hard

The beginning (tadada tadada…) I play like this:

Tabs:
G|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
D|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
A|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
E|7---7-----5--7--|-----7--5-------|3---3-----2-3-3-|2-3-3---5------0|

G|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
D|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
A|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
E|7---7----5---7-7|7-------5------0|3---3-----2-3-3-|3---3---5-------|

Sorry, I never tabbed before, so the ASCII might be wrong in timing, but those are basically the notes from the beginning as I can hear them. The open Eb is audible sometimes when GM emphasizes a vocal that's short and sitting in the middle:
for example “AND your mom” where Eb is played shortly under the AND.

Like I said, IMHO this is one of the best Pop song bass lines ever played. Just listen how GM uses the bass to emphasizes the syllables. You won't find this precision in many songs once you start listening for it explicitly. GM wrote this for his boyfriend and you can clearly FEEL the love that he put into it, especially when playing the bass. In the end he only says “Celebrate the love of the one you're with”. Who wouldn't wish for that?!

I might be completely wrong of course, but I hope that you enjoy rethinking and replaying the song like this.

Hey, thanks for your comments. I saw the request and thought this is such a nice song somebody should give it some attention, so I gave it a try. You're absolutely right about the Eb, but I mostly try to use standard tuning. So, I cheat by playing the Eb an octave higher on the A-string. Feel free to take my tab as a bases to create a version 2, I am curious what you can make out of it because I tried to bring the baseline forward using audacity, but in vain. Btw, I did find another rendition - again not what is actually being played - on YT, but it is funky and you can see the guy is really into it, check it out;

Well, he's playing a 5-string, so easy to play the low Eb without de-tuning

Cheers
