Helloween — Closer To Home bass tabs

HELLOWEEN
'Closer To Home'

tab by: adb666

Intro
8X
G ———————————— | ————————————————— | ——7 |
D ———————————— | —0—53—2—0—0—————— | ——— |
A ————5——5——5— | ———————————3—0—03 | 5—— | 5—5 ... and so on.
E ———5——5——5—— | ————————————————— | ——— |

While singing:
Markus is frickin' quite a lot here. He varies the bass part freely.
I think there is no exact riff, only a basis to play on. I just write
down some standard patterns. Feel free to write something like this on
your own. Can't be wrong :)

1.) 2.)
G|:————————————————|————————————————:|——————75—75——————|
D|:————————————————|————————————————:|————35—————75————|
A|:5——505—3——————3—|5—5505—3———————3:|5035—————————7535|
E|:—————————0123———|—————————0—1—23—:|—————————————————|

or so:
1.) 2.)
G|:————————————————|————————————————:|———————5—75——————|
D|:————————————————|————————————————:|———————————75————|
A|:5——505—3——————3—|5—5505—3———————3:|5—5505———————7505|
E|:—————————0123———|—————————0—1—23—:|—————————————————|

The small bass riff before the "And in my cabin ..."

G|: ——————————————————————————————— :|
D|: ————6—5———3———————————————————— :|
A|: 5—0———————————5———0—3———2———1—0 :|
E|: ——————————————————————————————— :|

The part "And in my cabin ..."
D, B—flat:
something like this ...
G| —————7———|—————————————————————————|
D| ————7—7—7|8———8———10—8——7——————————|
A| 5—5————5—|——————————————————10—8—7—|
E| —————————|—————————————————————————|

Sorry, but I don't know the F—maj and a—min part right now ...

The silent part is something like this:

8X
G|:————————————————————————————|———————————————————:|
D|:————————12——————————————————|———————————————————:|
A|:5————12————12——————————————3|——(3)————————0—2—3—:|
E|:——————————————10(slide to)3—|—(3)—0—1—2—3———————:|

The solo part is not transcriptable. Here Markus is frickin' on D maj and
C maj 2 measures each. Sometimes he uses the half riff (see above) from the
silent part. But later it seems to me that he just improvizes.
I play something like this:

G|:——————————————————————————————|——————————————————————————————:|
D|:——————————————————————————————|——————————————————————————————:|
A|:5—5————5—5—————5—5—————5—5————|3—3————3—3————3—————————0—2—3—:|
E|:—————5———————5———————5——————3—|—————3——————3———0—1—2—3———————:|

Later I play something like this (ME, not Markus :) ):

Dmaj:
G|——————————————————————————————————|————7—9—7———————————————————————|
D|————————4———4—5———5—6———6—7———7———|7—9———————9—7—5———7—5———7—5—————|
A|5———5—5———————————————————————————|————————————————7—————7—————7———|
E|——————————————————————————————————|————————————————————————————————|

Rhythm
* * * * * * * * * * |* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
1...+...2...+...3...+...4...+...|1...+...2...+...3...+...4...+...

Cmaj:
G|——————————————————————————————————|———————————————————————————————|
D|——————————————————————————————————|—8—10———8——————————————————————|
A|————————7———7—8———8—9———10———10———|————————————10———8—7—8—7———————|
E|8———8—8———————————————————————————|———————————————————————————8———|

Rhythm:
* * * * * * * * * * | * * * * * * * * *
1...+...2...+...3...+...4...+...| 1...+...2...+...3...+...4...+...

I think that's it ... (more or less :) ).

About Helloween

Helloween is a German power metal band founded in the mid 1980s by members of Iron Fist and Powerfool. The band is known as one of the pioneering power metal bands, being part of the German heavy/speed/power metal scene. Through the years they have influenced many bands, such as Edguy, HammerFall, Crystal Eyes, Celesty and Highland Glory for instance.

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|
  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|
  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
