Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

Strings and Frets:
Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:
- The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
- The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).
Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

This is not a 12/8 measure because it's not based on a triplet feeling. Instead it's a simple 4/4 shuffle groove, you count 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + … done!

You're right about the time sig being 4/4, but a shuffle groove is just another name for triplet feel – triplet 8ths in this this case (ignore the periods, just needed them to make sure the triplet notations and counter lined up).

He's not playing a note on every 8th count, but it's still in triplet 8th feel. Incidentally, the tab is inaccurate. What I tabbed above is the full first staff of the song.
