OmniPage Pro 9.0 README

========================================================

For the latest information on this product and other
ScanSoft products, please go to ScanSoft's Web site
at: www.scansoft.com.

WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL USERS

You need to log in as an administrator to install
OmniPage Pro. Please note that users logging in with
set to
cannot access OmniPage Pro. Users registered as
or
can access the programs.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION UNDER WINDOWS NT 4.0

To install OmniPage Pro on Windows NT 4.0, you need
administrator privileges. You must also have
administrator privileges to uninstall OmniPage Pro.

For optimum color—scanning performance under Windows
NT 4.0, increase your computer's virtual—memory allotment
to 100 MB or more. Windows NT will not allow you to set
your virtual memory higher than your available free disk
space.

COMPUTER RESTART REQUIRED AFTER INSTALLATION OR
REMOVAL

You must restart your computer after installing
or removing OmniPage Pro 9.

RETAINING OMNIPAGE PRO 8 FILES

You can reuse zone template files (*.zon), training
files (*.trn), and user dictionary files (*.ud) from
previous versions of OmniPage Pro. OmniPage Pro 9
will preserve OmniPage Pro 8 dictionaries, settings,
templates, and training files if the same installation
folder (OmniPage Pro 8) is selected during OmniPage
Pro 9 installation. These files are not deleted if
you uninstall your previous version. They will remain
in the data folder within the old installation folder.

If you have created a new folder or selected another
folder other than Caere, you can still use these files
with this version of OmniPage Pro by moving them to the
data folder within your new installation folder
(by default, OmniPagePro90) after installation.

EXPORTING LARGE GRAPHICS INTO MICROSOFT WORD

Multiple—page color images exported to Microsoft Word
may not load properly. Try saving the files one page at a
time, and then loading them into Word. You can then
append the files within Word into one document. If you're
unsure whether your document will encounter trouble, save
it as an OmniPage file (.met) first. This will allow you
to try saving your document in different ways without
having to re—process it.

ORDER OF OCR PROOFREADING

If you have performed OCR on pages of text with tables,
the text before and after the tables will be proofread
before the characters within the tables.

PROOFREADING OCR DURING AUTOMATIC PROCESSING

If you click AUTO to start automatic processing with
Proofread OCR selected as the OCR command, the Proofread
OCR dialog box will appear automatically after OCR. If you
close the Proofread OCR dialog box before checking all the
errors, you will be prompted to complete the proofreading
process the next time you click AUTO. To cancel the
proofreading process in this case, change the OCR command to
Perform OCR.

RESIZING TABLES FRAMES IN MICROSOFT WORD

If you have selected the "True Page" output option for
a table, and exported the result to Microsoft Word, you can
resize the frames horizontally, but not vertically. To
resize the framed table in Microsoft Word on either axis,
use the Property dialog box.

WORKING WITH SPREADSHEET DOCUMENTS

If you perform OCR on a spreadsheet document using the
"Remove formatting" output option, an Error 6 message may
occur when trying to save the document to Microsoft
Excel or other spreadsheet applications. To avoid this error,
use any of the other output format options for spreadsheet
documents.

For best results when recognizing spreadsheet documents,
select the "Spreadsheet" option in the AutoOCR Toolbar zone
button.

WORKING WITH COLOR DOCUMENTS

When working with large, color images, loading and
switching between pages may be slow.

POSSIBLE MACRO VIRUS—ERROR MESSAGE

If you receive an message about a Possible Macro Virus,
do not be concerned. It is a false detection associated
with the file OPFOR70.DOT. The latest versions of McAfee
Software does not flag the file as a problem. Older versions
of McAfee virus—detection software cause this message to
appear.

BLACK IMAGES APPEAR WITH ATI TECHNOLOGIES GRAPHICS CARD AND
256—BIT COLOR DEPTH

If you see all—black images in OmniPage Pro's image
viewer when your monitor is set at 256—colors and you have an
ATI graphics card installed on Windows 98, your graphics card
probably needs an updated software driver.

To download the appropriate driver for your card, go to
this Web site: support.atitech.ca.

SCANNING CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF A DOCUMENT

Most scanners are capable of scanning to the edge of a page.
However, if you export to Microsoft Word or other similar word
processors, and then print to a laser printer, a 1/4—inch (6.4 mm)
edge border may not print. This is a common limitation for
laser printers.

GETTING TEXT INTO QUATTRO PRO

You need to copy and paste recognized text from OmniPage
Pro into Quattro Pro rather than saving to a file format
that can be imported to Quattro Pro.

WORDPERFECT 5 USERS

Importing page—wide graphics from OmniPage Pro into
WordPerfect 5 may generate error messages. You may want to
split the graphic using OmniPage's zoning tools or turn off
Retain Graphics in the Save As dialog box.

REGISTERING MICROSOFT OFFICE APPLICATIONS WITH OCR AWARE

If you register Microsoft Office 97 applications (such as
Word 97 and Excel 97) with OmniPage Pro's OCR Aware feature
while these applications are open, the Acquire Text... and
Acquire Text Settings... commands will not appear until
you restart those applications.

DO NOT REGISTER OCR AWARE WITH OFFICE 97 ON DOUBLE—BYTE SYSTEMS

The OCR Aware feature does not work with Microsoft Office 97
applications on double—byte operating systems (such as
Japanese or Korean). By default, OCR Aware is not registered
with Office 97 on double—byte systems. Please do not try to
register OCR Aware with Office 97 because this may cause
problems with your Office 97 applications.

If you have already tried to register OCR Aware with Office 97,
and your Office 97 applications are now crashing, follow these
instructions to correct the problem:

1. Restart your computer.
2. Open OmniPage Pro.
3. Choose "Options" in the Tools menu.
4. Click the "OCR Aware" tab.
5. Deselect "Enable OCR Aware" and then click OK.
6. Open Windows Explorer and locate this folder:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeStartup
7. Locate and delete this file: Aware97.dot.

You should now be able to use your Office 97 applications again.
You can also enable OCR Aware again in OmniPage Pro,
as long as you do not try to register it with Office 97.

CONFLICT BETWEEN OCR AWARE AND WORDPERFECT 7.0

If you register WordPerfect 7.0 with OmniPage Pro's OCR Aware
feature, you may have problems changing fonts in the WordPerfect
application. If you experience such problems, unregister WordPerfect
7.0 with OCR Aware and save your file as WordPerfect for Windows.
Please see OmniPage Pro's User's Manual for instructions.

GIF IMAGE FILES

The GIF image file format is not supported by this version
of OmniPage Pro.

SAVING TEXT AND GRAPHICS IN HTML FORMAT

If you save recognized text in HTML format, any graphics on
the page will be saved separately as JPEG files. You can insert
the graphics back into the HTML file in your target application.

EXPORTING TO MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

OmniPage Pro uses a rich text file (*.RTF) format when you export
documents to Microsoft PowerPoint. If a document is not in an outline
structure (with indented formatting for various levels of information),
a separate slide may be generated for every line in the document.
Please see your PowerPoint documentation for information on making
adjustments to the document.

LOSS OF SIDE—BY—SIDE COLUMNS WITH DRAG AND DROP PROCESSING

If you create zones on a multiple—column page image and then drag
the page to an OLE—compliant application to convert it to text, the
side—by—side column formatting will not be retained. Instead, the
text will be displayed in one wide column.

To preserve side—by—side column formatting on a page, perform OCR
within OmniPage Pro using the Retain Flowing Columns output setting
and then save it to a file type that supports the formatting.

SHARING YOUR SCANNER WITH OTHER APPLICATIONS

You cannot scan in OmniPage Pro while you are scanning in another
application. If the scanner is in use when you launch OmniPage Pro,
the Scan Image command will not be available.

MESSAGE GENERATED BY A DISCONNECTED SCANNER

For some scanners, an error message may display when you launch
OmniPage Pro while the scanner is disconnected or turned off.
This message sometimes appears behind the OmniPage Pro desktop.
You will not be able to work in OmniPage Pro until you dismiss
the message (by clicking "OK"). Press the Alt+Tab key combination
or minimize all applications to locate and dismiss the message.

PAPERPORT DELUXE USERS

When dragging color or grayscale images from PaperPort
Deluxe 5.3.1 desktop to the OmniPage Pro icon, PaperPort
will convert the image to black and white. This may
result in poor—image quality and reduced OCR accuracy
within OmniPage Pro.

USING OMNIPAGE PRO WITH PAPERPORT LINKS

In most cases, when you install OmniPage Pro, PaperPort software
automatically uses OmniPage Pro's OCR engine. This means that
OmniPage Pro OCR will be used to convert images to text when you drag
them onto text—based application links in PaperPort. However, with
some versions of PaperPort, you may have to manually change the OCR
engine to OmniPage Pro.

To make sure OmniPage Pro OCR is used with text application links
in PaperPort:

1. Open PaperPort and choose Link Preferences in the Edit menu.
The PaperPort Preferences dialog box appears.
2. Click the icon of any text—based application in the Category
scroll list.
3. Make sure OmniPage Pro is selected in the OCR Package drop—down
list.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for other text—based applications.
5. Click OK to accept the current selections and close the dialog
box.
