Mudvayne — Death Blooms 5 String Standard bass tabs

Song: Death Blooms
Band: Mudvayne
Inst: Bass

Tabbed by Greg,
Copied, pasted, and retuned by Josh
Hey in case you haven't seen my other tabs, ummm i'm going through and re—tabbing all
of pelvic thrusts tabs to include a B
string, so you can play the songs in standard BEADG tuning. I recently got a request in
the email to retab death blooms and
dig, so im skipping not falling and ill do that after these. If you dont have a 5 string,
or want to exact ryans tone, go
check out pelvic thrusts tabs, their the best ive ever seen.

(josh's note: I encountered a problem here in the intro of this song, and i bet im gonna
catch hell from you hardcore tab freaks. Ryan's alternate tuning creates different
pitch harmonics than standard tuning, and i havent found a way around this problem.
if anybody can tell me the harmonics hes playing in beadg tuning that'd be great, but
to compensate for the tone deepening, i'll just retab them as 7's not 5's. If you have
a problem with this, im sorry, i cant change it unless i can get a chart of harmonics in
different tunings.)

About Mudvayne

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸

Comments

For those intro harmonics, the actual notes being played in the song are E-B-F#. On a 5 string in standard tuning, it's possible to get the exact same harmonics over the third fret of the A, E, and B strings, respectively. Some folks may have trouble getting these to resonate loudly on their bass however (playing with 100% bridge pickup and using some compression helps). If the third fret harmonics won't resonate, playing over the seventh fret of the A, E, and B strings will produce the same notes, albeit an octave lower. Also with a 6 string bass, playing the C, G, and D strings over the 4th or 9th frets should produce the same notes an octave higher. It all sounds pretty cool any way you play it.
