Pantera — Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills (ver 3) bass tabs

Band: Pantera
Song: Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills
Album: Far Beyond Driven
Bassist: Rex Brown

This is a great ass Pantera song. I figured the song to be of a 5—string bassseeing
as how Rex plays 5 string. If you only have a 4 string than tune it B—E—A—D. You wont
need the high G for this song. On your bass...turn your pan pot (pickup focus) a small
turn towards the bridge pickup. Add a small amount of tone and you should be ready to go.
Here goes:

B|———3333—3———3333—————————
E|—————————————————————————
A|—————————————————————————
D|—————————————————————————
G|—————————————————————————

Repeat this all the way to the chorus (1:07). Pause, and than repeat (at 1:09) through
the chorus. Stop again at 1:20. Resume this again at 1:25. Repeat the entire bass part
until 1:50. Pause again. resume at 1:52. Stop at 2:16. Resume again at 2:18. Stop completely
at 2:24. Let the drum start at 2:38, and than join in with the drums at 2:42 and than just
fade out slowly about 5 or 6 more until the end.

It is really a simple song, and very fun to play.

About Pantera

Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed by the Abbott brothers, Vinnie Paul (drums) and "Dimebag" Darrell (guitar) in 1981. Bassist Rex Brown would join in late 1981 with vocalist Terry Glaze. In 1987 Phil Anselmo would become the group's lead vocalist. After disbanding in 2003, any hope of a reunion were lost in 2004, when "Dimebag" Darrell was shot and killed on-stage at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio by gunman Nathan Gale while performing with his new band, Damageplan.

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
