Artist: Jaco Pastorius
Soul Intro/The Chicken
I played this with my high school jazz band so it should
be pretty close. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
The beginning up to the bass solo is in 3/4.
G—3—1—3———0——————————————7——————————————————————————————12—14—15—
D———————————3————0——3—4—7—7—4—5——————8———/15—14———————————————————
A————————————1——1————————————————6—5——————————————————12——————————
E———————————————————————————————6————————————————12h15————————————
G—6—5—6—————————————————10——14—12—10——————————————————6—5—6—5—8—11—
D———————8—6————3—6—7—10——————————————10—7—8—7—8—————4——————————————
A———————————4———————————————————————————————————4—6————————————————
E——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
G——10————10————10————10————10————10——————————10————10————10————10————10————
D——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
A—————12————12————12————12————12————12————12————12————12————12————12————12—
E——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
slowing down...
G————————————————————————————
D————————————————————————————
A——6———————————————6—————————
E————10——8———6—————————6—————
And now the solo.
Moderate funk tempo
G—————————————————————————————————————————
D————————————————5——88———————————————5—88—
A————55——6—6——8———————8——————5—5—6—85—————
E—6—6———————————————————6—6———————————————
*This can be played starting on the first fret on the A String
but I think this way is easier.
The rest is improve; but it basically follows this pattern:
G—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————8————
D——————————————5—88————————————————5——8———55—85—————55—6—8/10——————
A————5—5—6———8———————————5—5—6——685—————66————————66———————————————
E—6—6———————————————6—6————————————————————————60——————————————————
G——————————754——————————————————————————————————————————————————————7——
D—————44—7————754—————————————5—————22———————————————————22—3—35—5/7———
A——5—5————————————————22334455———3—3——————00112233———3—3———————————————
E—————————————————3—3—————————————————0123—————————————————————————————
G————————————2——5————————————————————————
D————22—3—352—————/——8—6—————————————————
A—3—3————————————————————8—6—————————————
E————————————————————————————8—6——4——6———
And that's the pattern and basically what he plays the first time thru.
He plays two bars of Bb, two of Eb, one of D, one of G, and three of C.
After each time through this routine, he plays:
G—————————————————————— ——6—5——————————————————
D——8—6————————————————— O ——————8—6——————————————
A——————8—6————————————— R ——————————8—6————4———6—
E——————————8—6———4———6— ———————————————————————

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:
Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:
Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:
G|-------------------|
D|-------------------|
A|---3---------------|
E|-------------------|
This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.
Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.
G|-------------------|
D|-------5h7---------|
Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.
G|-------------------|
D|-------7p5---------|
Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.
G|-------------------|
D|-------5/7---------|
G|-------7b9---------|
G|-------7~----------|
Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.
Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
