Band: Primus
Album: Antipop
Song: Laquer Head
Tabber: Claybrain ([email protected])
Tuning: Normal
(note about tuning: I think the album version is off by just a little,
not quite a half step..., but if you've seen it live, this should be right)

First, I originally looked at a tab, and found it to have a good explination
of the technique Les uses
—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—=—
Here is how Matt Walker ([email protected]) describes it:

Ok, I have been looking at the tab that people keep saying is right
and I think it's not too far off, after watching the Family Values
show a countless number of times and listening to this song, this tab
is almost exact. Les uses a little less treble on this than normal,
makes the sound a little meatier.

The technique is a little unusual. Bar the G and D with your index
finger at the 2nd fret, reach around back with your thumb and mute the
E, and put your middle and index fingers above the 3rd fret on the E
(you will hammer on with these two fingers) Your plucking hand should
keep a steady rhythm of slap....pop....slap....pop. Doing this with
the hammering will give the effect that Les is doing three muted
slaps. The rhythm is hammer, slap, hammer, pop then repeat.

except if you want to be on the beat, it starts w/ slap.
and thumb over 3rd fret on E string (where the X is on the following tab
line.

Key:
S — thump slap
Lh — assuming one is right handed, it the fret board hand hammering on some
string to
emulate another hammer.
P — Pop... just keep on sniffin, and you'll go pop.
F — Flamenco strum? just strum down..

Play Main Part again (Verse)

Then the Chorus

Bridge(part1):
During this part les holds down the 3rd fret of the E—string w/ thumb
and second fret of the D string... standard position for this song? :)

He slides down the fret board slapping with his slapping thumb E—string.
Down to the 5th fret... then brings that hand back up to the upper scale
of the fret board. Then taps some notes that I don't have on my four string
but he does because he got a 30 fret bass for his birthday.

(listen for extra fills, or add in your own..??...)

Bridge (partII):
G———————5H7P5H7—————————|
D———————————————0—0—————|
A—0H5—5—————————————————|
E———————————————————————|

play that several times then he plays it like this half way through:
|—3—|
G———————5H7P5H7——————5—6—7—|
D———————————————0—0——5—6—7—|
A—0H5—5————————————————————|
E——————————————————————————|

I personally like throwing in the extra diddy as much as I can
because it sounds cool, but it's your bass, you play it your way.

Play Chorus

Outro:
repeat last line of chorus, screaming "YEA!" on one ... then...

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
