Primus — Mephisto And Kevin (ver 2) bass tabs

Mephisto & Kevin

This song is great, and it's got a good bass line to go with it, so i have
taken the time to tab it out as best i can, so all you Les Claypool
wannabies out there can have some fun

h — hammer on
p — pull off
* — pop (used in the slap technique)
/ — slide

intro (bass comes in when Les starts talkin' about asparagus,
get with the drum beat)

as you play the the intro, all of the sound produced on the
main riff and the first fill
is very sharp, so you gotta pluck the stings quite hard
as you would if you were slapping

* **
G:——9p7—9————————————/ played 12 times with two fills
D:—————8—————————————/
A:———————————————————/
E:————————159/121——/ only play the slide the first time

at the slide on the E string don't play the note, just lightly tap
the 15th fret with your fretting hand, slide it down to the 9th,
then quickly up to the 12th, then down to the first

fills

G:——9/11——9/11——/ and shortly after /———7—7—7—7——/
D:——8/10——8/10——/ this : /——9—9—9—9———/
A:——————————————/ /————————————/
E:——————————————/ /————————————/

once you have played the main riff 12 times, you do a good timed slide

G:———————————/ the slide from the first fret to the fifth is slower
D:———————————/ then the slide up to the fifthteenth and back
A:———————————/ (if you can play Tommy the cat, you'll know what i'm
E:—1/5/151——/ on about)

Main verse

G:———————————————————————————/ play this the first time
D:——8——8——5—8——8——8—3h5—3h5——/
A:———————————————————————————/
E:———————————————————————————/

G:———————————————————————————/ this is the main part played mostly
D:———————————————————————————/ throughout the song
A:——8——8——5—8——8——8—5—8—5—8——/
E:———————————————————————————/

play the main part twice, then play this just before the guitar comes in

G:——————————————————————————/
D:——————————————————————6———/
A:——8——8——5—8——8——8—5—8——8——/
E:——————————————————————————/

now play the main part again, and then this :

G:————————————————————————/ the slide here is very fast
D:————————————————————————/
A:——8——8——5—8——8——8—8/17——/
E:————————————————————————/

Pre—chorus
* **
G:——9p7—9—————————————————————————/ play this 4 times
D:—————8——————————————————————————/
A:—————————8—9—10—9—8—7———————————/
E:——————————————————————10—9—8—7——/

Chorus

G:——17————15——14——/ play 3 times /——14——/
D:——15————15——15——/ then : /——12——/
A:————————————————/ /——————/
E:————————————————/ /——————/

into 2nd verse
* **
G:——9p7—9—————————————————————————/
D:—————8—5h8——8——5—8——8——8——5——8——/ the change here is very fast
A:————————————————————————————————/
E:————————————————————————————————/

now play the main part of the verse twice, then this fill

G:————————————————————————————————/
D:——8——8——5—8——8——8—8—8/10—11—10——/
A:————————————————————————————————/
E:————————————————————————————————/

now play the main part three times, then this

G:————————————————————————————————————/
D:——8——8——5—8——8——8—10—11—10—8—10—12——/
A:————————————————————————————————————/
E:————————————————————————————————————/

as soon as youn hit the 12th fret you have to carry on up to this

G:——————————————————————————————————————/
D:——15——15——12—15——15——15——12—15—12—15——/
A:——————————————————————————————————————/
E:——————————————————————————————————————/

play this part three times as you would the main part, then this fill

G:———————————————————————————————————————————/
D:——15——15——12—15——15——15—15—15/17—15—13—10——/
A:———————————————————————————————————————————/
E:———————————————————————————————————————————/

as soon as you hit the 10th fret continue down to the main part, so from
the 10th fret to the 8th fret and on

do the main part twice, then

G:—————————————————————————/
D:—8——8——5—8——8——8—5—5/13——/
A:—————————————————————————/
E:—————————————————————————/

now play this twice
(it's the same as the intro riff, but sounds more
heavy played here, as it does in the song), (and by the way,
the whole riff may be played like this, just that i prefer
the other)

G:—————————————/ play the strings sharply the first time
D:——14p12——14——/ then normally the second
A:———————13————/
E:—————————————/

now play the pre—chorus and then the chorus as before

as you finish the chorus do a slide from the first fret on the
D string up to the main part of the verse and play it three times
(listen to the song to get the slide at the right time)
now play this fill

G:—————————————————————————————/
D:——8——8——5—8——8——8—8/11—10—8——/
A:—————————————————————————————/
E:—————————————————————————————/

now play the main part again twice and then straight into the
pre—chorus riff and play it 8 times
until the 9th time where guitar does a little riff, where you play
* **
G:——9p7—9——————————————————/
D:—————8———————————————————/ do the 7 on 8 hammer on
A:—————————8—9—10—9—8—7h8——/ continueously until the guitar riff ends
E:—————————————————————————/ and very fast

now play the pre—chorus riff once more, then into the actual pre—chorus
and then the chorus
now after the chorus the main part is taken over by the pre—chorus
so play it twelve times, then on the thirteenth you have to cut it down for
a vocal fill so finish on 10th fret on the E string
now, the pre—chorus riff has been moved up two frets so do this
* * *
G:——11p9——11———————————————————————————————/
D:——————10—————————————————————————————————/
A:————————————10—11—12—11—10—9—————————————/
E:—————————————————————————————12—11—10—9——/

* * *
do this six times then end on playing the G:——11p9——11——/three times
D:——————10————/
A:————————————/
E:————————————/

Well thats it, it's explained in detail so you shouldn't have any trouble.
as i said it is pretty much spot on 100% right, but there may be a few
differences, but it's damn well good enough
so have fun

Any questions etc...., my e—mail is at the top

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
