Well, alright fellas. Let's go!

Last Chorus: (1:52)

Em D D C#m D Bm E
G———————————————————————————————
D———————————————————————————————
A———————5———5———4———5———2———————
E———0———————————————————————0———

I don't think there's any bass played here, it's just guitar. But I've
put the notes for what the chords are, because it looked weird with just
blank lines :)

A———7———7—7—6———6—6—5———5—5—4———4—4—3———3—3—2———2———————
E———————————————————————————————————————————————————0———

The chords are held for the same time, but there's a lot more notes, so I
can't compress it to take up the same amount of space. I'm sure you're
fairly intelligent human beings and understand this. ;)

End on Em.

Those last two couple of lines don't sound exactly right. I've
written a mixture (I think) of what sounds right, and what makes
sense. :) The Em and G bits *sound* the same, but logic tells me
they're not right. Oh well... it sounds pretty close, which is
what matters.

This also explains all the difficulty I had with the guitar tab,
trying to pick out those Em's and G's that are probably E/G and
G/E at various times. How dare they not play simple bass!

Verse:
—————

A—————————————2—2————2—2——————————————————————3—————
E———3————3—3————————————————————————————————————————

Again, in this verse, it's that A on the bass under the Em chord
that's confusing. I think it's that high octave, but if it's not,
or it's too tricky, just play it lower down. An open A string
will be fine instead.

Repeat Chorus:

Ending:

Big Time Operator — Bass

from Bucky Fellini

I don't really have any guitar for this, as it's pretty negligible,
except for that really messy solo. Therefore, the bass is the same
as the guitar!

THE DEAD MILKMEN
Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance To Anything) — Bass

from Bucky Fellini

Not Really Tabbed At All By: Ben Gladdle ([email protected])

Again, there isn't really any guitar to this one. It's all bass, and
it's all ridiculously basic.

Bass:
————

G————————————————————
D———————————————————— Play this for the verses.
A———————————————————— The hammer on is just noticeable.
E——3————————2h3—3———— Or you could slide it if you want.

G————————————————————————
D———————————————————————— Play this for the "artfags" bit.
A————————————————————————
E——2—2—3—3—2—2—3—3—etc.——

G————————————————————————
D———————————5—\—————————— Once, right near the end, instead
A———————————————————————— of the first part, it does this instead.
E——3—————————————————————

That's really it. No one's ever going to try and play this at home
anyway, so I don't know why I even bothered!

THE DEAD MILKMEN
City Of Mud — Bass

from Bucky Fellini

Tabbed by: Ben Gladdle ([email protected])

I'm fairly happy with this one. There's a tiny bit in the verse that
I'm not 100% on (the second D on the second line), but it's an
improvement on the guitar tab.

As for that D part (7—5—4) on the D string, logic tells me that it
should be (5—3—2) on the A string, but my ear tells me it's higher
up from the C that leads into it. However, this then makes it a huge
leap down to the F. I don't know. Do whichever you prefer.

Surfin' Cow — Bass

Yes, well, apparently people want some bass tabs, so I thought
I'd make an effort to appease everybody with a really easy one. Most
of this song is just the one bass riff. The rest of the riffs are
shown with the time above showing where they come in during the song.

The Dead Milkmen - Bucky Fellini (album) Bass Tab

How to Read Bass Tabs

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:

1. The Basics

  • Strings and Frets:

Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:

    • The top line is the highest-pitched string (G on a 4-string bass).
    • The bottom line is the lowest-pitched string (E on a 4-string bass).

Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------------------|
    A|---3---------------|
    E|-------------------|

This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.

2. Common Techniques

  • Hammer-On (h):

Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5h7---------|

  • Pull-Off (p):

Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------7p5---------|

  • Slide (/ or \):

Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.

    G|-------------------|
    D|-------5/7---------|

3. Advanced Techniques

  • Bend (b): Push the string up or down to raise the pitch. Example: G|-------7b9---------|
  • Vibrato (~): Shake the string slightly after playing a note to create a vibrating sound. Example: G|-------7~----------|
  • Muted Notes (x): Rest your finger lightly on the string without pressing a fret and pluck for a percussive "click" sound.

4. Rhythm and Timing

Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.

5. Slap and Pop

  • Slap (s): Strike the string with the side of your thumb for a percussive sound.
  • Pop (p): Pull the string away from the fretboard and let it snap back.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
