THE DEAD MILKMEN
Part 3 — Bass
from Metaphysical Graffiti
Tabbed by: Mike Brennan ([email protected])
Yes, I know, it seems weird because I don't even have a bass yet, but
with this little kiddie acoustic guitar, I figured out the bass parts
for this song. Here goes:
Main riff:
G———————————————————————————————————
D———————————————————————————————————
A—1—1—2—2—1—1—2—2—1—1—2—0———0—0—0———
E———————————————————————————————————
Chorus:
G———————————————————————————————————
D—1—1—2—2—1—1—2—2—1—1—2—0———0—0—0———
A———————————————————————————————————
E———————————————————————————————————
(Play main riff again once)
G————————————————————
D————————————————————
A—6——5——4————————————
E—————————4——3——2————
Play the main riff again and use the main riff through the solo
Part after the solo:
G—————————————————|————
D—————————————————|————
A————4——5————4——5—|3———
E—3———————3———————|————
G—————————————————|———————————————
D—————————————————|———5———————————
A————4——5————4——5—|6—————6————4——5
E—3———————3———————|————————3——————
This part is used during the "I saw you naked and you were hiding under
a tree" part, and right when Rod and Joe say Born Free for the second
time, start playing the main riff again and keep playing it for the
rest of the song. For anyone who needs lyrics, they're on this site,
and I think you can figure it out.

That's fairly accurate. The last line is a bit hit or miss, but it's
not toooo bad.
The rest is all the same except for a break in the final chorus
at 1:42, during which you just play the following...
G—————————————————————————————
D—————————————————————————————
A———6—————6—————6—————6——5————
E——————4—————4—————4——————————
It was called Me and Julio Down By the Crackhouse
'Cause even Julio Iglesias is me
End on Ab.

Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:
Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:
Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:
G|-------------------| D|-------------------| A|---3---------------| E|-------------------|
This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.
Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.
G|-------------------| D|-------5h7---------|
Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.
G|-------------------| D|-------7p5---------|
Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.
G|-------------------| D|-------5/7---------|
G|-------7b9---------|
G|-------7~----------|
Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.
Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
