I have lost all my chops, it sounded awful.
skinny little strings

On the plus side,since not playing it my bass playing is coming along nicely.
I spent years on guitar & I seem to have forgotten most of it, its kind of sad but you got to move on, eh?
Same here, man. Fifteen years playing guitar, and last year, after only a month or two back on bass, I picked up my guitar to jam and had pretty much forgotten everything, even songs I've played hundreds of times. Even simple solos. It was embarrassing.
Let that be a lesson to those who say if you can play one, you can play the other. Aside from strings and tuning keys, bass and guitar are as different from one another as night and day.
If I stop playing my bass for a couple of weeks I forget most of the songs I routinely play and lose so much sense of groove and feel.
I'd suspect you need to keep playing any instrument frequently or you lose that feel.
I used to know all of Manson's songs on guitar before switching back to bass for about 2 months. Switching back to guitar full time I have literally forgotten 97 percent of his songs and I listen to him religiously. Lol it doesn't make any sense
why don't you guys just put some time into both of them? i've been playing bass for ten years and guitar for 5 years. i don't miss a day on the bass, but i'll miss a couple days on guitar. i pretty much remember everything i can and have played on the guitear. I think as long as you have some kind of regiment you're good.
I'm lucky, I don't have that problem. Tried to play guitar. Can't get my fat fingers to isolate one string. I figured if a guitar has 6 strings, a bass has 4, it should be like a third easier to play. Not really. Its apples and oranges. This cat is a bass player at heart. Don't want to play anything else. I find your lack of bass disturbing.
I do break out the guitar regularly now so I no longer have that problem. But back then it was pathetic; I could shred along on rhythm guitar to Metallica's Dyer's Eve no problem, then I spend a month or two solely on bass and all of a sudden was unable to accurately play rhythm on something as simple as Pearl Jam's Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.
Like IamMark said, your hands simply lose the feel. Muscle memory will only do so much; if you don't stay in practice, that muscle memory's going to end up needing some major jogging.

Because to me bass is so much less interesting. Oh I get to play 50,000 G's when the guitarist gets to solo? Not on my watch. I'll take the solo
no offense linkinpark232, but if you're saying bass isn't as interesting as guitar, you're not using the bass to its full potential.
any instrument is as interesting as you make it. there's much more to music then just root notes and soloing.

I've played bass primarily tons more than guitar so I have used it to its “full potential”. Am I not allowed to prefer an instrument over another or not?
