The poll for advice about bass effects
I figured that we should start making polls about advice that we give to each other to improve our sound so here is the one for the bassists using all kinds of effect.
Feel free to share your own advice
For expample : if you use a synth effect, I strongly suggest playing with your fingers and not a pick, and the closest to the neck as possible to get the most out of the effect.
Adding a chorus and/or a lower octave effect can be really cool too !
You may think that compressor pedals are useless but they are really usefull for all genres, if they have a tone knob, they can add a little “power” to your sound when you play with a pick which is awesome for rock and metal.
If you play other genres such as funk, it's really usefull for slap so that there isn't a huge volume difference between finger and slap, and it evens the volume between the different strings which can be really usefull if you enjoy playing with the two higher strings a lot !
Well here's this: If you play a Thunderbird with distortion just use the neck pickup
Because it doesn't as horrible. I honestly don't like distorted bass at all, but if I use it with a Thunderbird you get a smoother sound like you do with a guitar. It's not as thick

I like having a compressor. That and a noise gate work well for eliminating my unwanted noises. Most of them anyway
How do you guys set up your distortions ? full drive like a guitar and Cliff Burton or little distortion so it adds to your sound ?
Well, if you use full drive like a guitar and Cliff Burton it sounds like total shit to me.
I agree with link. Just a bit is enough
If you use too much drive like a guitar it sounds like a mess. I think of it as cramming too much food in your mouth, except it's too much distortion. Lol
