So I had to sell my bass to get a new guitar and I don't really play bass seriously anymore, any suggestions on a cheap 5 string bass that would be good for recording metal?

Get a six string bass, then you could play it like a guitar when you want.

I'm pretty sure you can get a 5 string Ibanez for a reasonable price.

In Vancouver there is an Ibanez 5 for $250, and a Jackson 5 for $325. There is a squire for $200. Check local pawn shops.

Sounds to me like you need a Squier Vintage Modified Bass Six, it's a re-issue of a Fender from the early 60s, it's a baritone guitar, basically a guitar and bass in one package, check the demos out on youtube

Can't imagine playing an Em7 barre chord at the 12th fret on a six string bass

Actually it's not a baritone guitar, it's way more of a bass than a guitar
