My 6 string consumes batteries. If I leave the battery in, it usually dies within a few days. Which tells me it's always on.
I think some active systems are wired with a jack that has a switch in it, so when the cable is inserted it turns on, when the cable is out it's off.
Not the case with my bass though.
And because I have to unscrew my electronics plate to swap out batteries, I rarely play the dam thing because it's a pain.
I should probably just cut a battery box and change the jack.
