I did the exact setup - SX Short Scale Bass, added some light gauge piccolo bass strings and tuned it up one octave. Cool little bass to play some bass lead with… talk about hammer-ons!

I remember that I was pretty impressed by Joey DeMaio of Manowar by playing piccolo bass when I was in my teens.. nowadays I don't find it too appealing.

I have never played it though.
