Bill Wyman
I'm a huge fan of the Stones and i really like Bill Wyman's bass playing in the band.
I think he is a very under valued bassist when people make their top 10 lists. What do you guys think?
I never listened to the stones apart from their biggest hits. What record would you recommend? especially to hear bill wyman's best?
Any best of compilation would be a good start especially for the singles as a lot of them were not from their regular albums.
For me Beggars Banquet/Let It Bleed/Sticky Fingers are probably their best albums in my opinion. On these albums I think Bill produced some of his best playing.
Even “Between The Buttons” was a good album of earlier material that would be a good listen aswell.
I think Bill is a very good bass player but I suppose he gets overlooked at times because he was never flash with what he played. He did of course create a brilliant rhythm section with Charlie Watts.
Good point bass freak Bill was never flash, just stood there with a deadpan expression & created a great rhythm section within the band.
Another rumour doing the rounds which may dampen his importance is that he may not have played bass on all the Stones records. There are suggestions that Keith played bass on certain sessions & even Mick Taylor possibly played bass too when he was in the band.
“Exile On Main Street” I know credits certain songs with Keith on bass for example but other albums do not. I suppose it all adds to the mystery & history of the Stones!
When Bill was stood there looking deadpan he was actually checking out the girls in the crowd as Ronnie Wood found out the first time he played onstage with him
Bill's a good player & probably does deserve more credit than he receives but I don't think he loses any sleep over it.
Don't know if he is one of the top 10 bass players in the world but he is very well respected. Helps being in one of the biggest bands in the universe of course!
