Having played in death metal band myself once, I'd have to go with death as well.

Is there a difference?
There is. Black metal is fast, but straight foreword. Death metal is more complex with timing and stuff. With that said, I'm sure we know what I'm going with.

I think another reason I like death more is because there's lots of thrash influences but black does too.

I'm not clear on the distinction between black and death metal, but in the early ‘90s, when I was in the Army, my buds and I were into stuff like Cannibal Corpse and Mortuary. It was a machismo thing; you’ve got a bunch of bad-ass infantry guys, full of adrenalin, piss and vinegar, cranking this loud, offensive, aggressive music…

For me it was just a phase, though. I was kind of done with it after a few months.

Death metal is usually faster and the vocals obviously are a growl compared to a snarl. And the lyrical themes are more graphic in death metal than black metal most of the time. Death metal is more about gore while black is more about real life things: War, religion, etc. Most of the lyrics in both genres are completely stupid but the music sounds cool
