Do strings have to have the silk wrap?

I was given some strings by a friend that he didn't want, I was thinking of putting them on my acoustic bass.

Thing is they are way too long and the silk bits wouldn't even be there if I cut them to fit.

Will they still wrap & be usable without the silk?

Don't worry about the silk, cut them to fit. When strings are wound the central core is wound around the ball and twisted, then it takes less than two seconds to wind the string, blink and you'll miss it, silk is wrapped around the ball end to cover any sharp pieces, some strings, but not all, have a silk winding at the headstock end to protect the machine head but it's not necessary so don't worry
