I bought a Chowny bass 2 weeks ago and just now I realised that when I turn up the tone knob with the pickup volume off I get a really awful static hum that fades away a bit when I touch the metal piece where you plug the cable. Does anyone else have this problem?
Could be that the tone pot isn't grounded and your making that physical connection yourself when your touching the jack plate
I would have a look at the connections on the rear of the tone pot and look for any dodgy solder joints or a wire that may have dropped off
Definitely sounds like a grounding issue, but the fact it is there with the pickup volume off is odd. Checking the connections as MotorMog suggests is definitely the first step, but the issue could almost be in the amp, or even the power source.
