I had the same thought when I first saw those basses. In the eighties I was a licenced radio amateur. Apart from transmitters and receivers, I built quite a number of yagi antennas.
I used to listen to amateur radio/shortwave/sidebands back in the early 90's, I bought a new sw radio recently and was shocked how the airwaves are so quiet now.
Radio china, American fundamental religious people and not much else.
Even the military 11.175 is quieter.
So no board under the frets? No thanks - to me playing that would be like walking in mud, having to be very deliberate and mechanical rather than just flowing along. Give the frets some side rails and maybe.

We got satellites nowadays.
So if we don't need an antenna, we could mount a stick and use it as a rake.
Maybe for basses like the Eb-3 where there's no where to rest your thumb in the middle where the best string action is you could have a detatchable thumb rest in the middle.
