New tab ratings: I'm calling bullshit
Well its 3 months since Lon started this thread and nearly all the tabs are still getting 5 star ratings even though there is not a lot of newbies tabbing now. I feel very flattered that my tabs are getting this rating but I don't think the vast majority are worth it, even if the raters do. Is there any movement on the ideas raised by members earlier in this thread, or are we happy now that the bullsh….ers have stopped.
When I raised this issue a few months back, it was because there would be batches of tabs being posted, sometimes a dozen or two at a time, and within minutes every single one of them was rated 5. This was indicative of some person(s) abusing the ratings system, because it would be highly improbable for dozens of new tabs to be pored over, played through, contrasted to the source song and rated all within five minutes of being posted.
At least now it's taking a day or two for new batches of tabs to be rated, which indicates people are actually taking more time to go over them. But as indicated by the fact that everything is getting rated a 5, there's still obviously some dishonesty going on. That, or the raters are inexperienced and can't tell a wrong note from a right one.
well I know there is missing, extra and duff notes in my tabs so maybe the raters, like you just said, because of there inexperience can't tell, and are just happy that there is a tab to play from. This makes marko's idea of a like button very appealing. They can like a tab without rating it.
Or it's just easier to give 5 stars than type in any comments.
Geez - of the ~100 “New Bass Tabs” only 7 aren't rated. And all that are rated show 5-star.
I think they are being rated 5 star because its the easiest way to rate tabs. Also people learning the bass possibly won't know any different and mark it as 5 just because they like the tab, whether its good average or bad. Don't forget, that people requesting tabs, usually can't work some songs out for themselves so when its given to them on a plate they think its great.
I think the owner of this site is doing it because:
A. The ratings were happening within minutes of the owner posting them, and that is hardly a daily event.
B. The rating shows up in Google search results, which influences clicks to this site.
C. I have never rated one of my own. But mine *used* to get 5 stars shortly after posting. And they didn't deserve it. Nor were mine a result of fulfilling a request.
I think some people may give a tab a 5 star rating just for the sole reason of someone actually tabbing a song they're looking for. Kind of a “thank goodness there's something on this!” reaction. Now unless there's multiple versions of the same song, and a tab gets a 5 star when there are better versions already posted… I don't know what's driving that.
I have gave out one 5 star and that's it. Even a song that was a special request that was tabbed I haven't rated because its not complete so I don't know how to rate it. I think if you rate a song you should have to give your name and give your thoughts as to your rating. I think that would stop the 5 star mumbo jumbo…

At the moment all ratings less than 5 have to have a comment left which then appears under the tab. For whatever reason raters won't / don/t want to do that so they just rate them 5 or don't bother rating at all so you end up with loads of so called great tabs and what's left are crap. In the past, looking back in the tab history, people have rated tabs fairly but now they don't. GOD KNOWS
