Loudlon's Tab Corner!
Ten incorrect versions of Under The Bridge?! Jeez its not that difficult! Problem is, some people are so anal that they have to play it note for note, every dotted quarter note, every half rest, even Flea never plays it the same way twice. Every now and then try to play YOUR version of a song, no ones gonna critisize you for not being note perfect and you'll develop quicker if you're not chained down
I'm that anal LOL I try to do note-for-note transcriptions when I tab. I don't think I'm always successful, but it helps when you can look up the bass master track on YouTube.
When you're tabbing you have to get it right but when you're playing it isn't that essential, the point in trying to make is that many people give up learning the bass cos they cant play the tabs note for note, but if they follow their instincts they can play basslines that fit the song. Another example is Jazz, its about the moment, and when you write Jazz down its no longer Jazz
Oh, yeah, that I agree with. I transcribe note for note but I don't necessarily play note for note every time. That would get rather boring after a whle.
Totally agree!! When I tab, I try to do the song justice and get it as correct as I can. When I first started playing, I felt the need to play every note of every bassist. That's tough to play all styles as they were recorded in a studio. Now, I am developing my own style, I learn a song the way I play it.
I like learning to play the songs as they were recorded, but that sort of playing only happens in my basement when I play with the music. When I play with others, most of the time other musicians learned the song and altered it to play in a key the singer could sing in, or completely changed the arrangement of the song altogether.
While it's nice to be able to see and play what the original artist recorded, I think it;s more beneficial for me to know how the songs are broken down, knowing the root notes, and the progressions. This also lets me explore and experiment with my own fills and transitions more.
My aspiration is to play songs as recorded, note for note. My reality, especially when playing with others, is to try to get it close enough that the average listener doesn't realize I'm not playing it note for note like the recording.
Hit the roots, hit the signature licks, have fun. Best compliment I can imagine getting would be someone asking how I came up with a lick that they really liked.
Just a note:
When I include an isolated bass track with a tab, it's there for a reason – so that you can hear the bass line while following the tab, and will know that it's accurate. So next time, actually play the track and follow the tab BEFORE rating it, so you don't ruin a 5-star rating for absolutely fucking nothing.
Thanks.
I think you are taking this too seriously, LoudLon.
I'm easily irked sometimes, this is true.
